David and Jacinta's Walks- 2025

Moscar, Derwent Edge and Dale Dike Reservoir David went for a walk on his own today.  I fancied a walk on the Eastern Edges today and the parking spot at the bottom of the Moscar byway is now a favourite place to walk from. Now that the collapsed section of Sugworth Road has been repaired, it also means that the return from the folly on Sugworth Edge is shorter. The walk starts in my least favourite way- downhill- but not too badly so in this case. After passing the farmhouse at Moscar House, there's a turning uphill at last beside a gate that leads down to Cutthroat Bridge; we sometimes talk about taking photos of the weights used to close gates, so here's the first: That'll do the job! Moscar, Derwent Edge and Strines- David and Paul Bog Cotton and Kinder in the distance David had one his periodic walks with Paul; we met at the bottom of Moscar Cross Road (below Moscar Hall) as Sugworth Road was still closed because of the landslip  above Jacob Plantation. This is really handy as it provides a spot to park that isn't well known. There is usually plenty of parking space on any day of the week, and every possible parking spot on the Snake Road was taken. We crossed Mortimer Road, passed through the farmyard at Moscar House, and plodded up to Derwent Edge. Derwent Edge was popular, with quite a few DofE groups on their expeditions. We didn't treat ourselves to a trip to Back Tor but made our way down Foulstone Road to Strines Bridge and crossed below Strines Reservoir, turning back towards Moscar.  Derwent Edge and Dale Dike Reservoir from Moscar The weather forecast was very good, so we sent off to do a walk, last done in July 2024. Instead of going to Low Bradfield, we parked up near Moscar Cross Road which is less frequented- normal parking places (like Cutthroat Bridge) were packed. This is a great parking spot for busy days!  The walk starts with a walk down to, and through, the farmyard at Moscar Lodge, where we spotted the first lambs of the walk. No sheep dogs, though, this time. Lonely lamb! We then had a fairly gradual ascent to Derwent Edge, meandering through the grouse butts and pasture. A right turn begins the familiar 3km walk up to Back Tor, passing the Wheel Stones and the Cakes of Bread. On a clear day like Sunday, the views were magnificent.
