David and Jacinta's Walks- 2025

 Meltham to West Nab This was the second time that we've done this walk, which is from "Day Walks in the South Pennines"- it was a lovely Sunday, and we anticipated that most car parks would be very busy but not the free (!) one in the middle of Meltham. Happily, we were right! After a quick shop in the Co-Op to buy tuna for Hamish, we set off up the steady climb from the centre of the town, past Sun Royd farm, stopping for a few minutes to admire the black ewes with their lambs. Google tells us that they are probably Zwartbles but possibly Balwens. Most likely Zwartbles! The climb was interspersed by a few decorative  kissing gates, this one appearing to be made from a selection of reused parts. Gate made with lots of recycled bits We stopped for a break at the West Nab trig point; to our surprise, quite a few couples passed by as we had our snacks and drinks. West Nab trig point Dropping down from West Nab, we joined the horizontal track above the Wessenden valley....

 Wessenden Head and Marsden We had not been out to Wessenden Head for quite some time and we hoped that there would be parking space for us on a fair Sunday. Quite a few cars were parked on the road up to the quarry where we usually park, so we left ours opposite Carol's tea waggon. This was an excuse for a tea, coffee, and slice of Yorkshire parkin. Suitably fortified, we set off for our walk. We decided to take the waterway which runs almost level above the flight of reservoirs and is eventually labelled "Deer Hill Conduit". Wessenden Reservoir and Pule Hill Because the waterway maintained its height for its entire length with only a slight drop, we found ourselves at quite a height above the reservoirs, and eventually Marsden. Gaining (relative) height above Marsden (in the valley below) We made a steep and sometimes slightly perilous descent (probably the best part of 270m) into Marsden and stopped at Katie's Homemade Kitchen.
